Fiber is a very accessible medium and I have been truly fascinated by the use of cloth as a collage element for over 10 years. I am always experimenting with different types of fiber/textiles, beading, painting, printmaking, and found objects that can be attached to cloth or stabilizers.

I love the way textile art can push the boundaries of traditional quilting, embroidery and fine art. Using embroidery floss and beads are a novelty for me and I like making people re-think what is “craft”.

My work is about color and texture – relationships, contrasts, and blends. The images I use seem to go along for the ride. For me, art and being creative is an escape and a special place I can be.

I want to create images and objects that are special to me, so I tend to pull from my personal life, surroundings and interests. If I can engage the viewer to stop and look at my work for a minute or two, I know I have done my job well.

What are your goals? My goal for this year is to learn to do more fabric printing with screens and gelatin prints. Also, I want to experiment with more abstract imagery with collage and embroidery.

What inspires you? Nature is a huge inspiration along with photographing found objects. When I take my walks, I take my camera along to snap photos of trash or plants I might encounter along the way.

  1. These are so FUN! Do you ever make larger works using these as sketches/models? They seem to have “bigness” already in them, like they are already large…maybe quilts or something similar?

Congratulations, Susan! I enjoyed seeing your work.

  2. Susan is amazing! She is a social media maven and shares so much knowledge with others who want to learn. She teaches online, so make sure to check that out if you want to learn from her.

A couple of years ago we had a show and Susan sent in a few of her pieces. Even though her photography is so good, there is nothing like seeing the work in real life and they were beautiful!

  3. Thanks for the awesome compliments! James, I use to work larger, but my hands have developed carpel tunnel, so I have had to scale down my size. I like the look of hand stitching and beading, so the small sizes are easier for me to handle.

And thank you Rachel for your continued support!! You have been a terrific artist friend and supporter! Big hugs to you. 🙂

    cheers,
    susan

  4. I have always enjoyed your work so it was great to read more about it.And,congratulations on the feature…you do textile art proud

  5. Alas, Susan…these are wonderful works. I’m glad that you are able to create in spite of CTS, and hope that you continue doing so for many years to come.

  6. I LOVE your work and all the details, textures, and colors! It makes me feel good just to stare at them awhile!

Do you still give online classes in fiber art? I have dabbled in different crafts for a long time (quilting, painting, stained glass) but have always wanted to learn how to experiment on my own with mixed media fiber like you have done. Anyway, I am interested in creating…?
