About two years before retirement I developed an interest in photography, initially photographing my daughter’s volleyball games. Eventually, I transitioned this interest to include taking landscape photography that captures the beauty of nature.

The camera image is simply the starting point for my work. I try to create a finished image which best captures the emotion, lighting, depth and dynamic range that I experience when observing the scene before me.

I frequently utilize multiple images, captured by varying shutter speed and combine them using software during post-processing to capture the full dynamic range and depth of a scene as I observe it. Post-processing with Lightroom, Photoshop and various plug-ins help me to craft the final image.

I use these plug-ins to make a photograph more painterly, generally letting the image determine how it will be treated. Some would say that this treatment blurs the line between photography and painting; I consider this my artistic license.

My goal is to create art which I think will sell, not just capture an interesting image. Many of my images were captured during plein air competitions in the Brandywine Valley. Participating in these competitions has forced me to shoot things I might not normally consider and has definitely improved my photography.

The plein air competitions have also allowed me to capture images from the beautiful Brandywine Valley in locations not normally accessible to everyone.

My clients frequently tell me how they can imagine themselves in my scenes because they seem so real and appear to have great depth. They also question whether my artwork is photography or painting.

  2. Sherry, thanks for your nice comments. I particularly liked the comment on my post processing because I take a lot of care and pride in this area.

  3. Robert, I am an artist (painting in WC and Acrylic); my husband Don is a photographer but not a pro. Would you please let us know what is the best camera to purchase that is not very expensive. We love your work and as you know you are terrific. On my web site look at the Gift Shop page to see his flowers. Thank you.
    Best Wishes, Rusty Wahl
