Why are your people blue? I’ll address the most obvious thing about my work.

There are two reasons why my people are blue. First, I am an artist, but more important, I am a mother who has a child with autism.

Blue is the color of autism and with each piece I create, I am not only doing it for my son, but also telling part of my story which is autism. It is a part of my life and therefore a part of my art.

Secondly, I don’t like to attach race to my work. I just want people of all races to look at my work and be moved by it. Be moved by it because of what it stands for.

My goal is to create work that will pave a way for my son. I want to leave a legacy for him and be able to leave this world knowing I did what God created me to do and that is to create art. Art that is funky cool.

Currently, I am working on a series about the destruction of a marriage. They are pieces that go through the phases that one goes through when their marriage is falling apart. Yes, it’s from personal experience.

This is a series of works that will be deeply personal for me. I don’t believe I have ever been so transparent. It’s scary and freeing at the same time.  But it is a journey that will go back in time and also go forward.

What inspires me the most is my son. He is the reason I keep pushing forward with my work.

Comments

  1. I love the bright colors as well and the subject matter. My favorite is the first one, “Blues Hall”.

  2. Thank you Paula!

  3. I just discovered your art and fell instantly in love with it. Maybe it helps that I am a musician and just like you also have a son with autism? Keep creating!
