My name is Alison Newth and I am a self-taught acrylic painter, living and working in the Peace River region of British Columbia, Canada.

My goal when painting is to try to capture the beauty and life of what I see when I walk outdoors. When I am in nature, I soak up the colours and marvel at the views which are in abundance in the Peace River region.

Painting allows me to turn all of those good feelings and imagery into something permanent–something that will stay with me.

Every painting represents those things that warm me and bring me happiness; they become a window to the natural world. Each time I am about to paint, I first have to feel inspired and motivated by an image or idea.

Considering that I often have multiple exciting images twirling around in my head at any given time, this initial inspiration is not hard to summon. What is difficult is choosing one thing to paint…perhaps which is why I can have more than one painting on the go at a time.

At times, I am driven by a captivating colour palate, a different perspective, or a new technique I am eager to try.

Lately, I have been experimenting with different colours to tint my canvas—oddly enough; this alone has the power to get me going. As a member of a local art group, I am surrounded by artists who are as varied as any group could be and this keeps me interested in the possibilities.

Local wildlife and nature scenes seem to be the main focus of my paintings. I often start with a black or other coloured background then paint with bold and exaggerated colours and lines.

If I am painting wildlife, I like to get up close and personal, paying special attention to the eyes—they tell a story all on their own. My goal is to paint more and continue to grow in skill and style.

Some paintings seem to have painted themselves, with little effort on my part. When that happens, I know I am on to something. I just have to keep on that trail to get where I know I need to be.
