I like to work in series, so I typically have four to six substrates prepped and ready for me to work on in my studio.  My substrates, cradled panels, canvas or 300lb cold pressed paper, are covered with Utrecht’s heavy professional gesso.

After it is thoroughly dry (24 hours plus), I use various mark making tools – graphite, pencils, inks, stamps – on each substrate and select a limited color palette for the series.

I prefer working with transparent, fluid inks and/or acrylics at this stage of my process. As each painting emerges, my work becomes more directed, less intuitive, and the image develops.

Painting is my way of telling my narrative – the history of my life.  As I work on each painting, I expose something intimate about myself.

Most recently, I have begun exploring abstracts that, at first glance, are unrestrained – free-flowing splashes of color dancing spontaneously across the canvas. On closer examination, intricate details become visible – symbolic shapes, delicate structured lines, intense color juxtaposed against negative spaces.

I try to keep my narrative subtle; an undertone that inspires the art, but leaves the final interpretation to each viewer.
