I believe that a great deal of the inspiration I feel to depict the beauty of creation started with my travels around the world as a young man. This journey was done by hitchhiking, working on a ship and traveling by buses and trains.

I experienced places of such beauty, ranging from the heights of the Himalaya Mountains to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, that they still burn in my memory.

The play of light on water or the sweep of the sun across a meadow stirs me to depths that I find difficult to express in words. I strive to put these feelings onto canvas.

It is my experience that taking the time to observe this beauty provides a healing experience, and I hope that what I paint will inspire people to take the time, more often, to look at the beauty that surrounds us and experience a feeling of gratitude and rejuvenation in their life.

I think that most artists experience metamorphoses in their work over time. My earliest work was largely abstract and, over time, changed to more representational images of sunrises and sunsets with a strong abstract element and vivid hues.

Currently it seems to be going through another change as I have been switching back to working with oils (after about thirty years of working with acrylics) and this seems to be leading to my work becoming even more representational with more subdued colors.

It’s important to me that a painting comes from the heart and not the head. This leads to a lot of changes and experimentation during the initial stages of a painting.

In fact, I often put numerous hours into a painting only to find that I have become more involved in the mental process of trying to figure out what needs to be done, than in expressing what I feel. At these times I often paint out the whole canvas and start again with the thought of doing my best not to control the painting but letting it speak.

It is when I allow the heart to lead the way that I feel a spiritual connection to the process of painting, and find that there is a far greater possibility of the painting saying what I am trying to express.

As Marc Chagall said, “If I create from the heart, nearly everything works: if from the head, almost nothing.”

And Auguste Rodin, “The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live.”

I am so moved by your insight into the beauty of creation, but also into the amazing artistry of the Creator. Thank you…

It means a great deal to hear these kind words. There is nothing more fulfilling to artists than to find that the work they create moves people in the same way that they are moved to create it. I believe the creative process is a connection to our Source and always hope that my work expresses that connection. Thank you for taking the time to look at my work and leave such an uplifting comment 🙂
