My name is Terry Mellway and I have been creating art most of my life, beginning as a young girl taking interest in all things creative. Drawing was always my first love. I originally learned from working through a “Jon Gnagy, Learn to Draw” kit my parents bought me for Christmas when I was about six.
I moved on to oil painting and by the time I was a teenager I was creating many pieces in this medium. Once I got married and began raising a big family, I put my painting on hold for many years, although I continued to create crafts of all kinds to make extra money. Although I have taken some workshops along the way, I am basically a self-taught artist.
A number of years ago, I began to draw and paint again on a regular basis. My husband encouraged me to pursue it full-time, so I retired from the corporate world and followed the direction my art took me.
Since that time, I have been working mostly in coloured pencil but also in watercolour, acrylic and oil. For me, finding the medium of coloured pencil was almost like finding my soulmate. I love the control I have and the ability to get in deep to bring out the most minute details of my subject matter.
This is what really drives me—I thrive and experience great joy finding and delivering all the nuances of my subject that most people never really “see.”
Details such as the varying and subtle changes of colour and shape in a flower’s petal or the blossoming of dappled sunlight on it’s surroundings—these are the things that inspire me to create.
I have a dedicated place I use as a studio. Here, I work at my craft and teach workshops for beginners and intermediates in coloured pencil.
Since I began this new career, my work has been featured in a number of international magazines, including Coloured Pencil magazine and Anne Kuhlberg’s CP Treasures. In addition, I have been the recipient of many awards.
As a member of a number of art organizations, I have been involved in various aspects of the development of these groups. I am a member and participating artist of the Interlake Artist Studio Tour in Manitoba (aka the WAVE), as well as the Manitoba Society of Artists, the MB Arts Network, the Gimli Art Club and the Coloured Pencil Society of America.
I currently live and work in my Pencil & Brush Studio in Sandy Hook, Manitoba, Canada.
