I am an abstract mixed media artist with a passion for plants and texture, painting primarily with acrylic on canvas.

 

 

One of my favorite parts of the process is creating layers with palette knives, mediums to amplify the brush strokes, and found materials such as recycled paper and sand. I enjoy using a limited palette. Color mixing is a meditation that brings me joy.

 

 

Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, I lived in the southwest and west coast before settling on Vancouver Island, BC. My love of art, dance, theater, and writing developed into performance art during those years.

 

 

Hearing loss in my late twenties led to a period of introspection and reinvention. Emerging as a mixed media artist was a natural part of my personal evolution, based on a deeper appreciation of the visual and tactile senses.

 

 

My work is about shifts in perspective and connection with the natural world. I aim to uplift with my art. Through the use of color, subject, and even titles, I want each piece to offer positive energy.

 

 

I do not want my paintings to all look alike. Not every painting contains all of the elements of my style. The collections build on each other. Overlapping traits become more evident when viewing the larger body of work over time. There will be familiarity and surprise as I continue to push my boundaries.

 

 

I give a lot of thought to how I want to use my platform. It’s important to me to have something of value to talk about, not just trying to get attention or make a sale. For example, in the descriptions of my Wabi Sabi Plants I write about lore and uses of the featured botanicals. The idea was to share an interest that has influenced many areas of my life. It provides another way to connect, sparked by the meaning behind my art.

 

 

I started an interview series on my blog called Creative Adaptation, to learn about and celebrate ways that people have adapted to a challenge in the pursuit of their creative passion. My intention is to use creativity as a springboard for conversations about acceptance and understanding while hopefully inspiring all of us to embrace who we are. To give ourselves permission to be who we want to be, and show up as our best selves.

 

 

My longer-term vision is to hold shows with interactive elements and workshops, launch illustration and writing projects, and bring sustainable product collaborations into the mix.
