I’ve been a writer and artist for my entire life. I have been a full-time artist for about eight years now. When I was first interviewed for Artsy Shark in 2018, I was doing a lot of art shows and selling a lot in smaller shops and galleries. Today, I am doing fewer shows (just a couple a year) and selling more in arts centers and at museum shops.

While I have changed my approach on a few things, I still offer many different functional art products and teach art in person and online. So, it’s interesting for me to look back and see where I have made adjustments to my business. I think it is so important to do that in order to remain profitable and also to grow as an artist.

My art style involves whimsical art with bright colors and hopeful images. Eight years ago, I used many more elements in each painting (lace, paper, a variety of pigments). Now I focus on ink and acrylic primarily.

I also paint on different surfaces, like globes and wooden triptychs. I like to offer original art in different forms so people can enjoy it in their homes and offices. It is always my hope to have my art inspire people and give them a sense of joy and hope.

I’ve always been both a writer and artist, so one of the best things I’ve enjoyed the most are the books I’ve published. I wrote a novel in 2023 (The Space Between Dreaming), an art and poetry book last year (Poetry and Paint), and a kid’s book in 2022 (Mouse Turds on Granny’s Pillow). The kid’s book is based on a family story and the novel is about a painting and artist.

I also released a family card game called Cupcake Commotion in which I created the rules and did all the artwork. That was a fun project, because my family and friends all enjoy games.

The variety of things we are able to do today as artists is a blessing, but it can also be overwhelming. There are still many goals I have for my business. I’m always searching out other artists like me who want to brainstorm and help each other grow. I’ve met so many knowledgeable, supportive artists along this journey.

Working as an artist is amazing, exhausting, thrilling work. I feel blessed to be able to do this and look forward to whatever the future holds.
