I like to disrupt balance by painting items falling or floating around in space creating tension, using manmade objects intermingled with nature, animal, birds and insects.

I try to add the element of surprise, appealing to the viewer’s intellect, leaving them coming back again intrigued and finding more elements over time.

For many years I have practiced traditional drawing and painting techniques. I build my images from the drawing stage to under-painting then the color layer and glaze applications.

This beautiful method, employed by the Masters of the 15th and 16th century, utilizes light manipulation through paint layers, pushing forms and elements to create the sense of three-dimensional space.

Working from life as much as possible, I begin each idea with an animal or object and do as many drawings needed to visualize my concept.

I build my still life set-up, place the objects into a dynamic composition, and utilize north light from my studio window when possible or stage an artificial light if needed. Building props and securing any flying or falling objects with wires can be very time consuming, but are vitally important to the beginning stages.

My studio, the Russian River Atelier, opened in 2008 and is located in Geyserville, Northern California. We teach the foundations of drawing, painting and color theory, as well as intensive figure studies. I am fortunate to work amongst a group of very talented artists who are both inspiring and dedicated to keeping this tradition alive.
