The overriding theme of my work for the past two years has been our persistent withdrawal from the Natural “analogue” world and the resulting sweeping changes this has ushered in. Namely, that we have entered a voracious, relentless, day-to-day Data World.

This has resulted in a body of work starting with my Blue Lady and Mask series and culminating in my Data World series.

We are, right now, experiencing a changing of the guard in every way. Robots are becoming more human. Digital money, digital shopping and digital social networks all have led to a shift—an alienation and recalibration of our previously perceived realities.

There are multiple realities. Capturing a few of these with my impressionistic photography has been at the core of my work from the very beginning.

“Empty Eyes IV” digital photograph, 66cm x 100cm
In the Mask Series I deal with the eagerness, on our part, to distance, alienate and remove ourselves from our perceived “norm.”

I chose the Venetian Carnival Mask to represent this. Historically it was a leveler, allowing people of different social standing to mingle and interact. Wearing one allowed the wearer to escape reality and slip into another world.

The Carnival Mask became a symbol of rebirth, a disguiser of intentions, of truth, a door into the unknown, leading away from the accepted day-to-day. The wearer offered himself up to the unknown. No boundaries. A suspension of all forms of perceived reality.

The works I create free the mask and wearer from their form, from their beauty, digging deep into their essential colour and light, reducing everything to its essence. I freed colour from its form.

Today we are moving further and further away from the natural world and immersing ourselves into a new Data World reality. However, none of my work is digitally manipulated or computer-generated imagery.

I use a unique photographic technique which I have developed over years. This allows me to “paint” with my camera on-site. I “reframe” reality, producing images that are impressions of a given moment.
