I am amazed by the contrasts seen in landscapes. For example, a dark, stormy sky paired with white houses illuminated by sunlight creates a striking contrast between light and dark. Such a view ignites love in me and begs me to be painted!

 

 

I am also greatly impressed by colour contrasts. I love scenes with yellow fields against blue skies or green and yellow landscapes. That said, it is nature that inspires me to paint.

 

 

Observing the countryside, especially in British and Scottish places where the sky often creates incredible art on its own, is a motivating force for me to capture these images on canvas or paper.

 

 

However, I don’t necessarily paint exactly what I see. I interpret the views in my own way when creating my artwork. Capturing the atmosphere of the scene is the most important thing for me.

 

 

My creative process begins with catching the essence of a vista through photography or sketches, often from multiple viewpoints. Over time I have collected many images. Each one is a potential source of inspiration for my future paintings.

 

 

Once I select a specific set of sketches or photos to work from, I begin to modify them to suit my artistic vision. I adapt the format to align with my chosen canvas. The painting process is started with an initial sketch on canvas, followed by an underpainting in a monochrome tone. The choice of colour at this stage sets the mood for the entire artwork, and guides my next steps.

 

 

Mixing colours is the most fascinating part of my practice. It can be a challenging journey to find the perfect combination of colours. Each attempt allows me to get closer to the right hues I am determined to use.

 

 

My ultimate goal is to share the visual effect I have created with you. I wish to evoke a sense of enjoyment, contemplation, and love for the natural world. Love is the essence woven into my art and is rooted deeply in the beauty of nature that surrounds us.
