My interest in photography began as an adolescent. I was drawn to the dramatic changes in the light and shadows around me during the early mornings and late afternoons/early evenings, what is often called the golden hour. When the sun is low on the horizon, and its warm, soft rays and golden glow bathes everything in ethereal light, is when the magic happens for me.

I’m a self-taught photographer and I aim to shoot compelling images that capture a unique moment in time, and the nuances of light and shadows in a scene. I chase the light, and scout locations where I can envision when the light will be best. Then I plan accordingly so I can capture it in all its glory. I shoot mostly landscape and cityscape images, along with abstract and macro photographs.

Photography has taught me some valuable lessons in life, like the importance of showing up and being there, when the time is right, and to be right on the time when I’m out in the field. I’ve shown up many times at a location to capture an image, only to be disappointed because the conditions weren’t right and I couldn’t get the shot(s) I’d hoped for.

But I know that I made the effort, no matter how far I had to travel and the obstacles to be overcome, that things just didn’t work out the way that I expected. Life is like that sometimes. But you keep trying, because success isn’t often going to be easy.

“End of Day” photography, sizes vary
I’ve been fortunate to be born and raised in Minnesota. We have four distinct seasons that provide endless photographic opportunities. Much of my work is from the arrowhead region of the state, along the rugged and pristine north shore of Lake Superior that runs from Duluth to the Canadian border. It’s a truly magical place full of natural wonders and stunning rivers, lakes, waterfalls and forests.

“Golden Grasses” photography, sizes vary
What makes it unique is that there’s not a lot of development along the coastline. Much of the land is open to the public and is filled with beautiful and excellent state parks all along the shore. Hopefully we can continue to protect all the wonderful and scenic public lands across our country for generations to come.

“Serenity” photography, sizes vary
I use Olympus and OM System mirrorless cameras and lenses. They make it much easier to tote along a heavy tripod. Prints are available in many sizes and formats and are professionally produced using archival inks and papers.
