My artistic practice is rooted in a thoughtful investigation of post-photography, material abstraction, and the mechanics of perception. Having studied semiotics at the New School for Social Research and fine arts in New York, and at the School of Visual Arts (BFA) and Hunter College (MFA), my work has evolved from traditional representation toward a process-oriented exploration of the image as an autonomous physical fact.

Following a distinguished 37-year career as a senior lecturer in photography and art, I now focus exclusively on my studio practice. I explore how images function when they are invited to step outside their conventional narrative roles.

In my studio, I utilize photography as a conceptual starting point to create works that emphasize pure presence and material density. My creative process involves a myriad of apparatuses and direct studio actions. I gather and manipulate various materials and elements from my environment. Instead of using a traditional camera to capture distant views or fleeting moments, I engage with these rich, textured substrates through close-range digital systems and direct physical encounters. In this space, the image-making process becomes a tool for transformation. It shifts the focus from a specific geographic place to a concentrated landscape of pure light, surface, and matter.

This methodology creates a unique site of encounter where time and material converge. By exposing these tactile substrates to controlled mechanical light, I detach them from their original biographical context, distilling them into a quiet, indexical record of texture and form.

The resulting works are presented as serialized matrices under subtle numerical classifications rather than literary titles. This structural choice encourages viewers to engage directly with the artwork through its inherent visual qualities, rather than seeking an external story.

Ultimately, these images function as serene yet powerful boundaries. Their opaque surfaces gently turn the gaze back toward the viewer’s own perception. They deliberately lose their recognizable scale, shifting between the qualities of vast cosmic landscapes and intricate structures.

My goal is to explore the very threshold of visibility and the expansive limits of the medium. Through these archival pigment prints, I invite the viewer to experience the image not simply as a window to a pre-existing world, but as the quiet birth of a new visual possibility.
