My name is Rocio Villanueva. I am an Italian-Guatemalan artist and photographer and I live in Guatemala City. I am self-taught, using digital photography as my canvas and Photoshop as my tool for creation.

My creative process begins beyond the camera. I make a paper sketch that takes shape through different elements, times, places and characters.

I develop this image through a series of steps that include research, adding words and poems, and employing metaphors that all work together to create a story behind the image.

My work focuses mainly on the psyche and on the human soul. I am interested in conveying human emotions and feelings through the manifestations of their cognitive reflexes—sensations, perceptions, thoughts and affective reflexes as seen from the subconscious and the unconsciousness.

In each photograph, I develop a story that is represented in parallel worlds, in scenarios that belong to an unreal dimension—without time—that are somewhat fantastic and romantic.

I use light, shadow, color and texture to make the photograph look more like a painting, thus preserving its timeless quality.

My surreal images are representations of life. They are created to express emotions and feelings that are familiar to the viewer because of their own human nature.

These stories come from metaphors that are created in my mind—they are nourished by my experiences, memories and thoughts.

My main objective is to have the viewer identify with my photography. I want them to feel like a part of the story, to interpret it according to their own experiences and make it their own.

For me, life needs to be explored from the depths of the spirit and the mind, to find in them a better place than reality itself, through the analysis of vague memories of childhood, the nostalgia of other eras and of other lives of other worlds and of death itself.
