Let’s go for a walk. We will breathe in the fresh air, take off our shoes and feel the cool grass. When we want to rest, we can dip our toes in refreshing water and watch the clouds float by.

The best days are the ones where I come across a magnificent natural scene. I like to linger and soak it all in, paying attention to both the charm and details of what lies before me.

Often the geography of a place, a sweet line of trees or the surface of a pond adorned with lovely reflections are what attract me, but it’s the transformation within me while visiting these gems that I want to breath into paint and canvas. The feeling of calm, life-affirming joy that nature provides is the main ingredient.

I suppose my Dutch heritage has had an influence on my artistic choices as I’ve adopted old world painting techniques to interpret a beautiful landscape. Devising creative ways to capture the subtle nuances of light and colour keeps the work fresh and pushes me to achieve the contemporary realism I strive for.

Having left behind both city and suburbia in favor of the countryside, I find myself in the perfect location to nurture my passions. I currently live in a century old farmhouse surrounded by a perfect combination of natural wonders. The rolling hills and streams of the valley I call home is bordered by mountains, rural farmland and majestic rivers.

Participating in a recent exhibit at a downtown men’s shelter expanded my view of what art can accomplish. Imagine a show that is for the pleasure of the homeless. It was surprising to listen to these men share their unguarded response to the paintings. Through their generous comments, I discovered just how healing, uplifting and soothing nature is for everyone.

I have since discovered that scientific research has proven that art, especially landscapes, reduce blood pressure, elevate mood, and generally aid healing and comfort. Now that there is empirical evidence of this effect, healthcare centers have begun embracing art as a therapeutic aid for both patients and staff.

My aim is to bring nature (through my work) to those who can benefit most. Locations might include eldercare facilities, health and wellness clinics, hospitals and hospices. Any place where people have a need for the restorative effect of art.

Partnering with nonprofit organizations or government funded agencies can expand the reach of this concept. Opportunities to spread a little joy and be part of a healing force are as bountiful as nature herself.
