An Art Studio That Stands Out

by Carolyn Edlund

Step inside an artist’s creative space, where atmosphere and presentation come together as an invitation to stay and visit.

Many artist studios and galleries line the streets of the River Arts District in Asheville, North Carolina. A major arts destination that was recently revitalized after flooding from a hurricane, it is extremely popular with tourists. Visiting is a joy, and holds the possibility of discovering amazing finds created and sold by local artists.

One studio stood out beautifully, and here’s why.

Standing on Depot Street in the River Arts District, Daniel McClendon Fine Art caught my eye. A striking abstract painting filled the front window—bold, expressive, and impossible to ignore. His name was displayed clearly and invitingly on the glass. It wasn’t just a sign, it was a statement.

Inside, the space opened up into a bright, airy gallery. Sunlight streamed across polished hardwood floors. Paintings were displayed with care; each piece given room to breathe. A pair of sofas invited visitors to sit, relax, and stay awhile. Toward the back, up a few steps, was Daniel himself, painting, surrounded by brushes, canvases, and color. You could watch him work, chat about his art, and sense the creative energy pulsing through the room.

It was more than a workspace. It was an experience.

What made this place memorable? Presentation, atmosphere, and connection. These three ingredients can transform your studio from “just another stop” to a destination people remember.

Here’s how you can do it:

Create curb appeal.

Think about your storefront the way a gallery would. Strong signage, clean windows, professional lettering, and one powerful piece on display can stop foot traffic in its tracks. Your space begins before visitors even open the door.

Choose a great studio name.

Branding matters. A name that reflects your work or personality, or a name chosen to represent something clear, simple, and memorable, can give you an identity that sticks in people’s minds.

Stage your art like a gallery.

Clutter kills impact. Hang your strongest work at eye level, give each piece room, and use good lighting. A cohesive display helps visitors feel like they’ve stepped into a curated exhibition, not an afterthought.

Invite people to linger.

Add a small seating area. Offer coffee or water. People who feel comfortable will stay longer. The longer they stay, the more likely they are to buy or remember you later.

Host special events.

Open studios, themed nights, or private previews for your mailing list members add excitement and exclusivity. A small “VIP Night” with wine and cheese can turn casual browsers into serious collectors.

Offer a behind-the-scenes experience.

Let visitors see your creative process. Display tools, sketches, or a work in progress. When people witness the technique and effort behind your pieces, they connect emotionally. And emotionally engaged shoppers become collectors.

Create personal connections.

Greet every visitor warmly and take the time to converse. Share your story. Ask about their interests. Art buyers often remember how you made them feel more than what you said.

The bottom line is that your studio isn’t just a place to make art. This of it as a stage for your brand and your story. The way you present your space tells collectors what kind of professional you are. When people walk in, you have the power to create a mood, a memory, and a moment they’ll share with others.

Ask yourself: What does my studio say about me? And more importantly: How can I make it unforgettable?
