My art is based on the practice of Taoism metaphysics and applying this in my daily life. It’s all about the resonating freedom of the mind.

We are all subjected to the “involving and wandering” of the universe’s energy. As we accept and follow this energy, we can use it. As we use it, we become part of it. I follow the truth and tell the truth as I see it. I express the “involving and wandering” of the universe’s energy by the free flow of energy in my artwork.

My images, which do not conform to a preset ideal, show ambiguous and mobile intrinsic feelings. This leaves room for each viewer to come away from my art with their own thoughts and ideas which they can use in their individual spiritual world.

I apply freeform lines, strokes and shapes, over which I lay color and let it run. My images look like they are moving and flowing outward, almost as if they have no boundaries. This exemplifies the universe’s energy and our daily living which is the “involving and wandering” without boundary, whether physical or mental.

The philosophy of Taoism and the practice of Kung Fu are integral parts of my creative process. Through those exercises, I experience the energy of movement and express that energy in my images.

My art includes rice paper painting, painting on canvas, calligraphy, water print, collage, found objects, sculpture and installations. I also write essays and poems. All of these follow the same art concept of using the “involving and wandering” of the universe’s energy to release feeling and free the mind.

I believe that art is a wonderful spiritual garden for humankind. Images which are created from enlightenment, not from thinking, are called “writing will.” This is when I create an image to express something deep in my mind that is inexpressible. It’s empathic and harmonic.

Through my training in Kung Fu and meditation, I know that when I stop thinking is when I am able to experience that realm of profound feeling. I seldom think a lot when I create my art. If I do, I feel just like I’m fighting the intuitive energy instead of going with its flow. I call this situation “unifying the mind and body into one.”

I am drawn to the subject of women. The subtlety and the abundance of women’s facial expressions and body movement are the most representative of the infinite changes in mood found in the “involving and wandering” of the universe’s energy. When painting women, I find it a challenge to create these images using combinations of long, free-formed lines at all times. Applying simple, limitless free-flowing lines, I strive to show the changing shapes of flesh and bone, the elegance of my subject matter and the richness of their abstract vitality. This becomes an endless exploration.

Each person has their own unique view of life. I hope my art can be used as a bridge through which everyone can freely go to their own intuitive realm.
