Two early experiences set me on the path to where my art is today.

The first was my daily visit to the school library for story time. I grew up in a small town, so books gave me a window into a world that was otherwise not accessible.

The second was a school field trip to an art museum. While most of my classmates complained of boredom, I was mesmerized by the paintings. They took my breath away. My creative journey and a lifelong love of museums had begun.

“On the Road” oil on panel, 10″ x 10″

I took only one painting class in college. I felt there was so much to learn, but found the core class offered no basic instruction on the use of materials or techniques. Each student was to work independently. The focus was only on creativity with a final critique.

Disappointed, I turned my attention to photography.

“Blueberries and Books” oil on panel, 5” x 7”

I loved the process of composing images and learning the technical aspect of it. Photography became my focus for years to follow. Then 9/11 happened, and that event changed everything for me. Life seemed too short not to pursue what I had always wanted to do—paint. It was then that I picked up a brush. I have never looked back.

“Sense and Sensibility” oil on panel, 10” x 8”

My current work is primarily oil on wood panels. My process is one that explores both composition and natural light.

Painting featuring a writer's room in a house by B St. Marie Nelson

“The Writer’s Room” oil on panel, 12” X 18″

I paint both interiors and still life. Each painting features books as the subject matter. While most people think of the essential message found in a particular book, my art goes beyond that. I feel that a beautifully bound book, even if it is worn and old, can become an artistic object by itself.

Books can possess qualities beyond their text. They have the power to educate, delight and motivate. Right now, people are looking to make sense of these trying times. Like a good story, I hope that my work offers the viewer a brief escape into a different setting.

I exhibit my work in shows and galleries across the United States. I also bring my art to libraries and schools in an effort to promote literacy.
