“Legs Man” watercolor, 17″ x 13″

For many years, I was a die-hard plein air painter. I lugged my easel and watercolors everywhere so I could paint in parks and gardens, on beaches and on sidewalks. It was great fun and taught me to be decisive and direct in my work!

Ultimately, though, I wanted my paintings to be more dynamic and bold. So I dove back into my studio, where I never have to contend with mosquitos, changing light or a sudden rainstorm. In my comfortable studio, I can take the time to design my paintings with expansive care and paint them with greater finesse. This enables me to create the most impact in my work, and communicate with my viewers as effectively as possible.

“Rules of the Game” watercolor, 18″ x 18″

Once I switched from plein air landscape to indoor studio work, I started painting people. I have been focusing on telling painterly, human stories through the use of grouping, cropping, unusual viewpoints, light and shadows and evocative color.

“Free Range” watercolor, 12″ x 16″

I do like to paint other subjects, such as florals, still lifes, and abstracts, and even now, yes, the occasional landscape! But my paintings of people challenge and engage me the most. They have reached a wide audience via national and international juried exhibitions.

I paint exclusively in watercolor, using a variety of surfaces, pigments, tools and techniques—whatever works best for my expressive goals.

I love the luminosity, fluidity and versatility of watercolor, and believe that it is unsurpassed in its creative possibilities! My goal is to make paintings that are contemporary, compelling, unique and just a little bit mysterious.

Teaching goes hand-in-hand with painting. I am quite devoted to my students, offering year-round painting classes and workshops. I have taught many hundreds of students, from beginners to professionals, in person and online.

“Making Connections” watercolor, 16″ x 22″

I love to speak about art, share my experience and knowledge, and help my students achieve greater success in their own artistic endeavors. I think that teaching is one of the most important things I do—it enables me to touch and enrich many people’s lives.

My work is in galleries from the Mid-Atlantic region, all the way south to the Virgin Islands. My paintings are in private and business collections throughout the country and overseas. I live in Greensboro, North Carolina, but love nothing more than to send my paintings off to other places where they will find appreciative homes!
