As an immigrant and an artist, I’m trying to find a way to combine Eastern and Western, traditional and contemporary, and express something of my own personal struggle.
Painting is my way to observe, understand and connect with this world.
In the last two years I have worked on paper with heads and figures using watercolor, which I had never tried before.
As part of my BFA and MFA studies in China, I trained in several art forms including oil painting, mural painting, textiles and sculpture and Chinese ink painting.
I make use of washes to form an abundance of effects. I am fascinated by the fluidity and ungoverned nature of watercolor. I enjoy watching the water and the color dancing on paper.
Colors flow delicately together and transitions between them resolve themselves naturally. For me each painting is a thrilling, new adventure and improvisational performance.
Creating portraits and figures is a spiritual experience for me.
I try to reveal an unseen part of human existence and human identification in my paintings.
I hope viewers can find some part of themselves resonates in my paintings.
