I was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Most people who know it refer to it as the “Soo”. Even though the Soo was a great place to grow up, I never quite felt like I fit in. I always had this little voice in my ear saying, “There is more to explore. Don’t settle.”
I came to realize in my early thirties that it didn’t matter how much I tried to deny it, I was an artist. I owed it to myself to be authentic and true to who I was meant to be.
I have never been a person who takes baby steps. In 2009 I sold my house, left my job, family and friends, and moved to Toronto, Ontario. It’s very nerve-racking to take a leap of faith. What if I wasn’t good enough or hated city life?
It took a few years to acclimate myself to the big city. Once I felt that I was ready to accept the outcome, I applied to an art exhibition. That was back in 2014. Since then, I have grown my curriculum vitae and am excited to say that I’m represented by eight galleries.
Making art isn’t therapy, as some people think. At least for me it’s not.
I’m not sure exactly how to describe the feeling—the best explanation that I can come up with is that it’s energy. This energy vibrates within me. For years it drove me crazy. It was like an insatiable thirst I could never quench.
I was always on the lookout for something that would ease the desire. Knitting? Nope. Home renovations? Nope. Furniture reupholstering? Nope. Sewing? Nope. It wasn’t until I was in my last year at university that I found out that I could complete the remainder of my degree with some courses from the Fine Art department.
I took a painting course, and it was the first time I had ever used acrylic paint. It was an instant love affair. I felt like I had finally found what I had been yearning for. My work primarily features bold lines and geometric forms that work together with a strong reliance on space.
My work is constantly evolving. My specialty is creating large scale abstract paintings for businesses and homes.
The last few years have been quite the journey. I finally have a place where I feel like I fit in and I have an amazing career as a painter.
