Artist Elizabeth Fitzhugh de-constructs old dolls, junk and memorabilia and reconstructs them into assemblages. She talks about her inspiration and

“Painting is a language that allows me to speak in ways that are not possible with words.”

“Depending on the emotion I want to create, I make color, saturation, focus and textural choices, sometimes adding additional story elements in order to create a heightened sense of drama or a dreamlike quality.”

“Painting is an integral part of my life. It is an expression of my joy in everything I see.”

“My photography career was very rewarding, but there was always a small fire inside that was not being fed. So after thirteen years, I retired my camera for profit and picked up a paint brush. This time for real. It felt like home.”

The thing that I love the most about art is the simple fact that there are no rules. The canvas is blank and you can fill it with whatever colors, shapes, and textures that you want.

“I wanted my work to be a combination of both – loose and carefree mark-making that leads to happy accidents in the work, but also carefully planned out. I am now aiming to achieve that juxtaposition through collage as well as paint”

“The whole world is a giant experience and anything can spark an idea for me. I can say that music is a big part of my creative process; I listen to a lot of R&B soul while I work.”

“My goal is to be able to share my art with many, I love getting original art to appreciators of all ages and walks of life and also be able to share with them how to create their own art. I strive for my art to stir emotion and connection.”

She believes that one of the best things about art is that it transcends you out of your world and into a land of dreams and make-believe.

“While I gravitate towards images of the land, the subject, ultimately, isn’t of paramount importance. In photography, craftsmanship can elevate the most mundane subject matter.”

“I do not follow one particular style. For me, different styles are only the tools to create art images.”

“Objects that are quiet and seemingly mundane are often my subjects. I look for something unique and try to find a way to present it so that it looses its identity and its associations”
