Fishing in the early morning when no one else was awake; the steam rising from the water that glistened from the sun’s touch. This wonderful memory is how I feel when I paint. It’s meditative, a place to get lost in.

My art journey begins with my father, a well-known Detroit commercial artist. I inherited my artistic talent from him, and I happily pass on his legacy.

Think Dan Fogelberg’s “Leader of the Band—his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul…I’m just a living legacy…”

I am persistently moving forward, observing everything around me. This type of motivation can be good for me as an artist. There’s always a risk when you are trying new techniques, but there can be a great reward as well. If you don’t learn and grow, your art can go stale.

Those around me may notice me studying the way the light hits their face and the multiple colors it creates on their skin. Or perhaps they catch me spotting a tree touched by sunlight. As an artist, it’s hard not to look around and see my next painting.

There is no “safe point” for me when I feel comfortable and confident in my work. It’s a bit of an anxiety ride, but it’s worth the journey.

Today, with my children grown, I am fortunate enough to spend more time studying my craft. Gone are the days of running to track meets, band concerts and other school functions. Time is on my side.

I specialize in realistic fine art and portraits, with portrait commissions in oils and acrylics. Commissions are accepted from around the United States. I continually marry realism with a little whimsy.
