“In the Moment” mixed media including collage on canvas, 30.5cm x 41cm

Having been brought up in two different cultures and being bilingual (Dutch/English) with a European outlook, I realised at a young age that art could communicate across languages and cultures. It was a universal language in which I loved to express myself and still do.

Art and my environment have always had a strong effect on me. After having lived in Amsterdam for many years, I moved to London to start my art education in earnest. I finalised by completing an MA degree at Brighton University.

I then spent many years teaching at an art college, working as an illustrator and painting. As time went on I had less and less time to do my own work. So, when the opportunity arose to move to the countryside and to start working on my art work full time, I relished it.

“You are Not Alone” mixed media on canvas, 40.6cm x 30.4cm x 4cm

The area in which I live greatly inspires my paintings. I work from my garden studio in the beautiful English countryside in a village by the Thames. The beauty of the natural world in all its variety influences my work.

Other influences on my work are many and varied—they include Henri Matisse, Vincent van Gogh, Ivon Hitchens, Pierre Bonnard, Mark Rothko, Patrick Heron, Howard Hodgkin, Frank Bowling, Helena Frankenthaler and various contemporary abstract and semi abstract painters.

“Playing Pink Light” mixed media on canvas, 90cm x 60cm

I aim to give the viewer a starting point, a way into the painting; yet being very unspecific as to allow the viewer space for their own personal response. In this way my art and it’s viewing becomes a dialogue—a joint experience.

“Rhapsody” mixed media including collage on canvas, varnished, 91.4cm x 91.4cm x 3.5cm

I strongly believe in amazing health and the wellbeing effects of nature and art. My work strikes a balance between abstraction and realism and describes an intense emotional response of a memory or a moment recalled.

“Getting out…” mixed media including collage on canvas, 30cm x 21cm

I like to use colour to surprise, to rejuvenate and to make the viewer look at something in a fresh way, and to do so on subsequent viewings. I also use colour, texture and form to create a visceral reaction. Using a variety of materials, I continue to develop my techniques. These include paint, ink, pens, crayons, pencils and collage materials. The collage materials I use vary greatly, but are often seen as disposable and worthless. These materials I find interesting; in using them they gain a new lease on life.

“Free” mixed media on paper, 31.5cm x 26cm

I have had a variety of exhibitions, both group and solo, and was selected for the Contemporary Painting Prize FRINGEMK finalist catalogue and have been featured in the ARTFolio2022 art book. As an artist my mission is to capture the powerful feelings inspired by the beauty of the world around us and to translate that experience into a visual record, which is both sensual and intellectual.
