My work focuses mainly on nature and the way light creates the scene. Beginning with the image in my camera, I use software to create a painterly version of my vision.

“City Street…San Francisco” is from an ongoing series. It is a virtual reality painting using the Oculus Quest II and the Vermillion App on canvas using oils and a palette knife.

This painting evokes for me the idea that we can take ordinary things for granted, but when we pay attention to them, they can be life giving, just like water from a garden hose.

When painting, I begin with an initial idea, deconstructing the forms and playing with shapes and colors. I like to paint the figures in expressive gestures—quarreling, laughing, loving or just standing by themselves.

I painted “Cuttin’ Fish” from a photo of my son working on a sport fishing boat. I wanted to capture his love of the ocean along with my love of painting it.
