Working with wool is the perfect medium for me because I love the playful nature of the final pieces, the soft and fluffy texture of the wool, and since I’m so bad at sewing, I can sculpt stuffed animals!

Born in Paris, France, I grew up in Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. So I have fun mixing all the different cultural and artistic influences I was exposed to as a kid in my books.

My paintings are abstract landscapes. Within the language of landscape, I am using motion, light, color and energy to evoke an emotional state, to create a sense of mystery.

I have been producing tactile wall mounted panels and sculptures over the last 22 years for both commercial and residential clients. I think of what I create as being the juncture of painting, drawing and sculpture.

I am interested in combining the structured nature of my background into my work. I use a lot of geometric designs, repetition and patterns to create multi-dimensional pieces. I am keen to experiment with light to see how it affects the nature of the glass in different conditions.

When I approach a painting, I start by applying color and texture. I typically do not have a plan in place but allow images to emerge through the application process. I like the idea of creating or molding something out of what happens organically. Sometimes the piece takes on a loose, wild and energetic aesthetic, while other times something calming, layered and more precise takes form.

Be it laundry hanging on a clothesline blowing in the wind, puffy quilts, an old barn, a field of flowers, colourful umbrellas, mother and child, a snowy night – all are made of clay. It is a medium that has proven ever forgiving. It allows me to take it wherever my imagination leads me.

An expression of worship, a piece that reveals a deep eternal truth, or a piece that simply leads the viewer into a deeper discovery of their own spirituality or the relationship God wishes to have with them – these are what you might discover in my works.

At one point in the Bush, I was painting the same scene sometimes several times a day with the changing light and weather. It never looked the same twice. I continue with mountainscapes from around the state. I am fascinated by the shapes and light of the mountains and consider most of my work semi-abstract.

I also draw inspiration directly from the stone itself. I think that ‘truth to materials’ is more important in stone sculpting than with any other medium. Before I begin carving, I like to closely study a stone specimen in an effort to discover what might be trapped inside it.

Art is the only work I ever aspired to. My degrees are in doing and teaching it.

I am a scientist and an artist. Though these two professions may seem disparate, I’ve created a harmony between them through the medium of silver crochet, which helped me to find my niche as a scientific artist.

My goal for VivaChas! is to spread my passion for these interests and the images associated with them around and record stuff that interests me – oh yeah, and to support some folks in need.
